A student workshop on (Re)Searching non-standard design avenues
Coordination: Aarhus School of Architecture, Denmark
Hania, Crete, Greece 26-31 August 2005
In the framework of the Socrates Thematic Networks, the ENHSA Thematic Network (European Network of Heads of Schools of Architecture), the Thematic Network of the EAAE (European Association for Architectural Education), a pilot action is being initiated, with the aim of inspecting the possibility of students' getting involved in the activities of the Thematic Network which are oriented towards the investigation of the different innovative "faces" of contemporary architectural design education in Europe. The main idea is that every year a different European school of architecture, partner of the ENHSA Thematic Network and member of the EAAE, will organize and hold a student workshop. The School will invite students from other schools of architecture in Europe so as to initiate them into its particular spirit of translating the contemporary discourses and practices of the architectural avant-garde into teaching and design pedagogy. The general title of this series of workshops is "(Re) searching Non –standard Design Avenues". The experiences of each workshop will be presented and disseminated in published and /or electronic form (texts, introductions, presentations, inspiration material, exercises, student work, evaluation approaches etc) creating a useful tool for all involved in architectural education.
The Aarhus School of Architecture, Denmark, will organize the first workshop for this action. It will take place in the city of Hania, Crete, Greece from 26 to 31 September 2005. A group of staff members of this School with different specializations will run the workshop under the title: Lost in Translations, Accommodating the "Other". The investigation of the "Other" as a mirror of ourselves will become the vehicle for the workshop. This workshop will allow students to get in contact with Danish approaches of understanding our contemporary world and the cultural role of architecture, while giving them the opportunity to scrutinize their own ways of thinking and creating architecture. The workshop experience will be presented to the teachers' workshop "Ideas and Reflections on Architectural and Urban Design Education in Europe: A Follow-up Forum" which will take place at Hania from 1 to 3 September 2005 and to the 8th Meeting of Heads of European Schools of Architecture "Present Positions (in)forming Future Challenges: Synthesis of and Directions towards the European Higher Architectural Education Area" which will take place in the same city from 3 to 6 September 2005.
On behalf of the Steering Committee of the Socrates Thematic Network ENHSA and the EAAE Council.
